GI-020. Anthony Meier Fine Arts

Anthony Meier Fine Arts

  • Address: 1969 California Street, San Francisco, CA 94109
  • Owner: Anthony Meier

Anthony Meier (A): Timeless, historic space that feels sophisticated and elegant. You could be in Europe, 19th century. The setting gives no geographical or time placement.

A: It was a logical progression from being a private dealer. I wanted to have a higher profile and participate in the art fairs.

A: It is a destination visit. There is no signage and there are no other galleries near us.

A: Distinctive, Refined and Historic. The gallery occupies the first floor in a historically designated landmark building by Willis Polk.

A: A discovery of sorts. Seeing historic and work of today juxtaposed in a domestic setting.

A: San Francisco is still regional. There are not a lot of opportunities to see world class exhibits in the galleries.

A: People don’t understand the commercial aspect. Gallerists mount exhibitions to sell work and without sales, they cannot survive.

A: Gustave Courbet, because of his audacity related to scale and subject matter.

A: Buying work from a museum collection. I sold a Gerhard Richter to a museum and received works in trade plus cash. It was a very unique transaction.

A: Distinctive ideas. Something via execution and/or material use that does something different.

A: See as much other artwork as possible so that they can speak articulately about their own work.

A: I don’t have one… the most important thing for an artist is to be familiar with the work of other artists so that he/she is informed as to what is going on.
